What is our history ?

The story started in 2005, when Vincent Atitwa registered a Self Help Group with the Government of Kenya’s Ministry of Culture and Social Services, called “Brother’s Self Help Group”. Vincent is a native of Munami and studied Water Engineering in Nairobi before returning to his rural community. Inspired by how urban community organizations were helping alleviate poverty in Nairobi, Vincent founded the Brothers Self Help Group. From its inception, the group’s vision was to help improve the livelihoods of members, but they understood that their livelihoods were interconnected with the livelihood of the greater community.

Since, a consultant recommended separating the group into two distinct entities:

One was a charitable organization, which would be registered as a CBO

The second one was an income generating organization, which would be registered as a co-operative. This consultant also recommended that the group re-name itself in a gender-neutral fashion. Then it became in 2011 MCDC.
